Soap making at public schools in Tanzania

Fredericksburg Essentials  partnered with Rotary Clubs in Fredericksburg Texas and Karagwe Tanzania in 2023 to train teachers and students in public schools in the northwest area of Tanzania to make liquid soap.  

In July 2024 Debbie traveled to Bukoba, Tanzania, to visit the schools.  The secondary school students at left demonstrated how they are making soap to use at their school for hand washing and cleaning.  One school is also selling soap to the nearby village to raise money to purchase more soap making supplies.  

With an initial investment from Fredericksburg Essentials, the Karagwe Rotary Club purchased supplies and trained 140 students in making soap with each school group making 1400 liters of soap.  

The Tanzania soap-making project is linked to a Rotary water and sanitation construction initiative at public schools in northwest Tanzania. Rotary Clubs have built rainwater catchment tanks, toilets, handwashing sinks, and sanitary napkin incinerators at eight schools benefiting a total of 3,739 children.
